Job details

Staff Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms)

Relativity Space is designing and building the Terran R rocket and the factory to produce it, leveraging additive manufacturing and rapid iteration. The Staff Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms) will lead full-cycle mechanism design — from concept and trade studies through analysis, fabrication, and test — collaborating with structures, avionics, fluids, and manufacturing teams to deliver flight hardware on schedule and budget.

Skills

  • Full-cycle mechanical design including CAD, analysis, fabrication and test
  • Kinematic synthesis and mechanism design for actuation and deployment systems
  • Understanding of structural strength, stability, and fatigue failure modes
  • Familiarity with pneumatic/hydraulic actuation, mechatronics, and instrumentation
  • Ability to work with additive manufacturing constraints and design for printed structure integration
  • Strong technical communication and cross-functional collaboration

Responsibilities

  • Define requirements and design criteria for flight mechanisms (stage separation, fairing/payload deployment, landing gear, aero control actuation).
  • Perform conceptual design, trade studies, detailed CAD, and system-level design decisions.
  • Conduct static and dynamic load reviews, material and manufacturing assessments, and fatigue/stability evaluations.
  • Lead analysis and validation activities, coordinating with loads, vehicle design, and test teams.
  • Oversee prototype fabrication, integration, and hardware testing; iterate designs based on test results.
  • Collaborate with additive manufacturing and production teams to integrate mechanisms into printed primary structure.
  • Present technical recommendations and trade study outcomes to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Manage schedules and deliverables to meet program cost, schedule, and performance targets.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline (required)
  • Advanced degree in engineering preferred but not required

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Generous PTO and sick leave
  • Parental leave
  • Annual learning and development stipend
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • Inclusive equal-opportunity workplace and reasonable accommodations
