Staff Mechanisms Engineer - job 1 of 2

Relativity Space is building Terran R — an advanced, additively manufactured launch vehicle — and seeks a Staff Mechanisms Engineer to lead design, analysis, fabrication and test of flight mechanisms (stage separation, fairing/payload deployment, landing gear, aero-control actuation). The role requires full-design-cycle ownership, cross-functional collaboration, and hands-on hardware development in a fast-paced environment.

Skills

  • Full-cycle mechanical design including CAD, analysis, build and test
  • Kinematic synthesis and mechanism kinematics
  • Pneumatic/hydraulic actuation and mechatronics fundamentals
  • Structural strength, stability and fatigue failure mode understanding
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, materials and surface treatments
  • Experience with additive manufacturing integration and design-for-manufacture
  • Strong technical communication and cross-functional collaboration

Responsibilities

  • Lead conceptual design, trade studies, detailed design, analysis, manufacturing and test of flight mechanisms (stage separation, payload/fairing deployment, landing gear, aero actuation)
  • Define mechanism-level design criteria and subsystem requirements and review load inputs, material properties and manufacturing constraints
  • Collaborate tightly with structures, avionics, fluids, vehicle design, loads, additive manufacturing and test teams to integrate mechanisms into printed primary structure
  • Plan, execute and document test programs (static, dynamic, functional) and iterate designs based on test results
  • Present technical trade studies and design reviews to leadership and stakeholders
  • Manage schedule, cost and risk to deliver mechanisms on time and on budget
  • Mentor junior engineers and drive best practices for mechanisms design and producibility

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical discipline (required)
  • Advanced degree in engineering (preferred but not required)

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Generous PTO and sick leave
  • Parental leave
  • Annual learning and development stipend
  • Comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision)
  • Inclusive equal opportunity employer with accommodation support
