Senior Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms)

Relativity Space is developing the Terran R launch vehicle using additive manufacturing and cross-disciplinary engineering to revolutionize how rockets are built. The Structures and Mechanisms team seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms) to lead full-cycle design, analysis, manufacturing, and test of flight mechanisms including stage separation, fairing/payload deployment, aero control actuation, and landing gear, collaborating closely with vehicle design, loads, avionics, and manufacturing teams.

Skills

  • Proficient CAD and detailed design experience across full hardware lifecycle
  • Kinematic synthesis and mechanism design fundamentals
  • Pneumatic/hydraulic actuation and mechatronics familiarity
  • Structural strength, stability and fatigue understanding
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and surface treatments
  • Experience with hands-on fabrication, prototyping and test
  • Ability to perform trade studies and communicate technical trade-offs

Responsibilities

  • Lead conceptual design, trade studies, detailed design, analysis, manufacturing, and test of flight mechanisms (stage separation, fairing/payload deployment, landing gear, aero actuation).
  • Define design criteria, subsystem requirements, and interface control with vehicle and partner teams.
  • Review static and dynamic load inputs, material properties, and manufacturing process effects.
  • Integrate mechanisms into the printed primary structure and optimize for manufacturability.
  • Work hands-on with prototypes, fabrication, assembly, and test campaigns; iterate designs based on test results.
  • Communicate technical decisions, present trade study results to leadership, and manage schedule and budget for deliverables.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical discipline (required)
  • Advanced engineering degree (preferred)
