2026 Shape Up The Vote - Community Engagement Coordinator

Position: Shape Up The Vote (SUTV) Community Engagement Coordinator

Location: Remote (preference for applicants based in MI, OH, NC, or GA)

Salary:  $4,200 - $5,460/monthly

Start Date: May 4, 2026

End Date: November 13, 2026

Position Summary:

Progressive Turnout Project (PTP) seeks applicants for a Community Engagement Manager to manage the barber and stylist experience across a multi-state community engagement program. Shape Up The Vote (SUTV) is a campaign to turn out the vote by activating barbershops and salons as voter engagement hubs in their communities. The Community Engagement Manager will ensure participating shops and leaders have a clear, consistent, and supportive experience—from first touch through follow-up—so they stay engaged, responsive, and set up for success during key campaign milestones.

The Community Engagement Manager reports to the Digital Director and works closely with Community Organizers and Communication Support Specialists. The role focuses on supporting the team to build and maintain a strong pipeline of participating barbers/stylists, strengthening retention through clear communications and responsive support, and coordinating training and partner alignment so execution remains smooth during surge periods. Based on the final location, the role may include regular travel to shops and partner events (~1 day per week) to strengthen relationships, support activities, and gather on-the-ground insight.

Unless located in one of the preferred states, this position is remote with a daily schedule based on time zone. As a full-time employee, you are eligible for benefits, including employer-sponsored insurance, paid time off, and paid holidays. There are no formal education requirements for this position. People of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Diverse applicants (particularly POC / Black womxn and allies) are highly encouraged to apply. If you are unsure if you meet the qualifications for this role but are still interested, applying is highly encouraged.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the barber/stylist user experience, including clarity of expectations, ease of participation, and a consistent support pathway for questions, issues, and follow-up
  • Support the team in building and maintaining the pipeline of participating shops and barber/stylist leaders by ensuring strong outreach materials, follow-up rhythms, and clear handoffs
  • Create and maintain practical tools that support implementation (talk tracks, message templates, checklists, FAQs, and troubleshooting guides)
  • Train, coach, and support Community Organizers and Communication Support Specialists to deliver a high-quality, consistent experience for barbers/stylists across states
  • Coordinate milestone-based planning and readiness (events, civic moments, and activation weeks), ensuring hosts and partners have what they need, and that follow-up stays organized during surges
  • Support barber/stylist leadership development, including identifying and supporting Shop Captains and other high-potential leaders within the program
  • Collaborate with local partners (democracy/voting rights/advocacy organizations) to strengthen credibility, expand reach, and support activations
  • Travel regularly (~1 day per week) to shops and/or partner activations as needed to strengthen relationships and improve program delivery
  • Provide regular program updates to the Digital Director, including participant feedback trends, pipeline health, and operational risks
  • Participate in end-of-cycle debrief and documentation after Election Day to capture learnings and recommendations for future cycles

The responsibilities listed are a general overview of the position, and additional duties may be assigned

Qualifications (You will be a good fit if):

  • You are excellent at designing and managing participant experience in a high-volume program (clear expectations, easy pathways, strong follow-up)
  • You can coach and support staff, and create usable tools that improve consistency and reduce confusion
  • You are organized and can manage multiple workstreams while staying focused on what improves the barber/stylist experience most
  • You communicate clearly and respectfully with community leaders and small business owners
  • You have the ability to travel regularly as needed to shops and salons located in the program states
  • You are proficient in Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Docs, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required):

  • Experience working with community-based small business networks (barbershops/salons)
  • Experience building community leadership pipelines (captains/ambassadors)
  • Experience supporting civic engagement activations and/or voter registration events

About Shape Up The Vote:

Shape Up The Vote (SUTV) is a non-partisan campaign to turn out the vote by activating barbershops and salons as voter engagement hubs in their communities. Over the 2020 election cycles, our programs have empowered over 2,500 barbers and stylists in 22 states to engage their clients around voting. We provide participating barbers and stylists with everything they need to run a non-partisan voter registration and turnout campaign, right from their shop in the flow of their day-to-day business. Shape Up The Vote exists because voter turnout is highest when it's driven by local voices that people trust, like their barbers and stylists.

We are committed to hiring candidates who reflect the communities barbers and stylists serve. We strongly encourage people of color, women, and others who are traditionally underrepresented in political campaigns to apply for this position.
