Senior Data Acquisition Engineer
Skills
- 5+ years building and operating production backend, data, or platform systems
- Hands-on experience with web data acquisition, scraping, or large-scale crawling
- Proficiency with browser automation tools and familiarity with browser behavior
- Strong SQL and NoSQL experience
- Experience designing systems with retries, error handling, testing, and observability
- Practical knowledge of AWS production services, VPCs, and service-to-service communication
- Solid networking fundamentals including TLS/SSL, timeouts, and failure modes
- Proficiency with CSS selectors and XPath for data extraction
Responsibilities
- Design and build a scalable web data acquisition platform used by multiple teams
- Create shared abstractions and tooling to simplify adding, maintaining, and operating scrapers in production
- Make architecture tradeoffs balancing cost, reliability, and performance
- Implement robust retry strategies, error handling, and failure recovery for ingestion pipelines
- Add observability via logging, metrics, and alerting; monitor and improve data quality
- Collaborate cross-functionally with data engineering and product teams to support new data sources and requirements
- Operate and maintain production systems on AWS, including networking and on-call responsibilities
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
- Advanced degree in a related field is a plus but not required
