Communications Specialist

About Spark

Spark is a science-driven, philanthropically funded non-profit that accelerates progress on unsolved climate challenges. Our goal is to enable a safer climate by filling targeted gaps in current climate actions. We look around the corner at the key blind spots that pose big climate risks or offer big climate opportunities, like major sources of unabated emissions. Then we work to speed up the development of the fields needed to address those challenges.

We are a team of scientists, policy experts, innovators, and systems thinkers working to build today’s foundations for the comprehensive climate solutions we will need tomorrow. Rather than betting on individual pathways or innovations, we work to grow a field as a whole so that the most effective science and solutions can be surfaced and scaled. We use a large suite of field-building tools to support new research, markets, policies, and talent development, through both in-house initiatives and building broader coalitions. We are currently focused on super pollutants from agriculture (specifically methane and nitrous oxide), warming-induced greenhouse gas emissions, and methane removal.

Spark’s impact is made possible by a community of generous and pioneering individuals, foundations, and organizations that share our vision for a safer climate future.

Position Summary

Spark Climate Solutions seeks an experienced Communications Specialist to support the execution of communications across a growing portfolio of programs. This is an execution-focused role designed for a highly capable writer and content producer who can quickly develop communications fluency in complex technical topics and who thrives in a fast-moving, dynamic environment. This position reports to and works in close partnership with Spark’s Strategic Communications Lead to develop content and materials and manage outreach channels.

Specifically, this role will focus on:

  1. Content production: blogs, fact sheets, website copy, social media content

  2. Management of outreach channels: newsletters, social media

  3. Content organization and planning: editorial calendar planning and coordination

Who We’re Looking For

  • A skilled, prolific writer with a demonstrated track record of producing high-quality content on complex or technical topics with little revision needed.

  • An experienced communications professional who can take a strategic direction and run with it.

  • Someone with strong experience managing outreach channels, who has owned newsletter and social media production and knows what works well across different platforms and formats

  • Someone who cares about climate change and ideally has a solid fluency in climate-related topics

  • A curious thinker who asks good questions and can get up to speed on technical subject matter quickly—who can then translate complex science into clear, accessible content

  • A well-rounded communicator with broad knowledge of different content types and outreach methods

  • An organized, detail-oriented communicator who can manage multiple workstreams, production timelines, and priorities

  • A team player who can work collaboratively and effectively with different stakeholders

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce content in collaboration with Spark’s Strategic Communications Lead, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, messaging guidance, and audience needs: draft blogs, fact sheets, programmatic updates, website copy, slide decks, fundraising materials, and social media posts in support of Spark’s organizational and program communications.

  • Execute social media outreach—drafting, coordinating internal review/feedback, and scheduling of posts across LinkedIn and other platforms, maintaining consistent cadence and quality.

  • Manage email newsletter production: writing and editing copy, coordinating with the Strategic Communications Lead and program teams on content.

  • Supporting the development and ongoing maintenance of Spark’s internal content library, including program toplines, slide packages, key stats, templates, and photo/graphics repositories. Help ensure materials remain current, organized, and easily accessible to program and leadership teams.

  • Manage routine content updates on Spark’s website, which will be redeveloped and relaunched this year.

  • Assist program teams with preparation of slide decks, info sheets, and other programmatic communications materials as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of professional experience in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field; or Master’s degree with 3+ years of experience.

  • Strong writing skills with demonstrated ability to turn complex or technical subject matter into clear, engaging content for non-expert audiences.

  • Experience managing social media platforms (especially LinkedIn) and email marketing tools.

  • Organized and detail-oriented; comfortable managing multiple concurrent content projects and meeting deadlines consistently.

  • Collaborative working style with the ability to take direction, ask good questions, and coordinate across multiple teams with different priorities and voices.

  • Nice to have: Experience in climate communications..

  • Familiarity with basic website content management

  • Experience with basic graphic design tools, such as Canva
