- Experience in laser communications or optical communications system development
- Deep understanding of PAT, modems, and photonic hardware
- Proven systems engineering from concept through qualification and operational deployment
- Hands-on electromechanical prototyping and subsystem integration experience
- Ability to lead test campaigns, environmental qualification, and performance validation
- Strong written and verbal communication to drive decisions across teams
Responsibilities
- Define end-to-end architecture and system performance requirements for a deep-space optical communications terminal
- Translate mission objectives into engineering specifications and trade studies
- Lead hands-on electromechanical prototyping, integration of optics, electronics, and mechanical subsystems (gimbals, pointing mechanisms, mounts)
- Drive pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) and photonic hardware design, testing, and validation
- Manage implementation through in-house design or external partnerships and suppliers
- Plan and execute development campaigns, derisk interfaces, and validate performance before system integration
- Coordinate cross-functional teams and synthesize technical tradeoffs to support program decision-making
Education
- Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field
