Skills
- Hands-on familiarity with Python and SQL for data workflows
- Experience with orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster or similar)
- Experience with data warehouses / lakehouses and Postgres
- Experience operating data infrastructure in cloud environments (GCP or similar), including containerized workloads (Kubernetes, Cloud Run)
- Knowledge of data reliability, observability and pipeline operations (Grafana, metrics, logging, alerting)
- Proven leadership, coaching, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Ability to review and guide data models, debug pipelines, and make architecture decisions
Responsibilities
- Manage and grow multiple data engineering and GIS teams (up to ~10 engineers and specialists), including hiring, coaching, and performance development.
- Enable teams to deliver high-quality, reliable data platforms, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data models that support product and ML use cases.
- Partner with product managers, ML engineers, and stakeholders to make pragmatic data architecture and platform decisions balancing short- and long-term goals.
- Drive delivery outcomes, set technical direction, and unblock teams by contributing senior-level technical guidance when needed.
- Promote data reliability, observability, and operational best practices (monitoring, alerts, pipeline ops).
- Foster an inclusive, collaborative culture and provide regular 1:1 coaching and feedback.
- Introduce and improve data engineering practices and capabilities to accelerate data access and unlock new product opportunities.
- Represent data engineering in cross-functional leadership discussions on strategy, technology, and hiring.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Advanced degree (MS/MEng) is a plus but not required
- Relevant professional experience can substitute for formal education
