Senior Backend Software Engineer, Search
Skills
- Deep hands-on experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch (index design, cluster management, query DSL).
- Proficient in Python and its ecosystem as the primary development environment.
- Practical experience with semantic/vector search (KNN, ANN/HNSW, embedding pipelines).
- Experience building and tuning relevance (BM25, function scoring, hybrid pipelines).
- Troubleshooting production issues in search or data-intensive systems.
- Familiarity using AI-powered developer tools (Cursor, Claude Code, etc.) in daily workflows.
Responsibilities
- Own search service end-to-end: index design, query pipelines, relevance tuning, cluster health, scaling, and upgrades for OpenSearch.
- Drive technical decisions around hybrid retrieval, embedding model selection, scoring/normalization, and personalization.
- Translate business requirements (facets, dietary filtering, personalized ranking) into performant search features.
- Develop features across the search stack: mappings, query builders, function scoring, KNN vector search, and embedding inference.
- Incorporate AI-powered developer tools into workflows and establish best practices for their team adoption.
- Raise code quality via reviews, testing, technical presentations, and opportunistic refactoring.
- Mentor and guide junior/mid-level engineers and participate in the hiring process.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field preferred
- Equivalent practical experience accepted
