Job Description :
The New York Post provides readers with the best in News, Sports, Pop Culture and Entertainment – with signature wit, irreverence and authority averaging 90 million unique viewers a month. Over the past 224 years, The Post has evolved into a multi-platform media company spanning print, digital, video, audio, app, television and commerce.
We are seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Sports Reporter to join our sports department’s digital team. This is not about wins and losses or X's and O's— it’s about capturing the stories that unfold beyond the scoreboard. From the personal lives of athletes and their significant others to the cultural moments that intersect with the world of sports, this position requires a keen eye for compelling narratives, strong reporting instincts, and the ability to engage readers with must-read content.
Responsibilities:
Pitch and write multiple daily stories exploring the off-the-field lives of athletes, their relationships, and the cultural impact of sports figures.
Proactively develop and land exclusive features by securing interviews with athletes, their families, and key figures in their orbit.
Leverage social media and digital trends to discover under-the-radar stories that will resonate with The Post’s audience.
Provide thoughtful, nuanced coverage at the intersection of sports,
entertainment, pop culture, fashion and business.
Lead quick-turnaround coverage on viral moments, breaking sports-adjacent news, and trending topics with accuracy and speed.
Collaborate cross-functionally with editors, social and multimedia teams to enhance storytelling through visuals, video, and interactive content.
Use audience analytics and engagement metrics to inform coverage strategies and maximize reach.
Craft sharp, engaging headlines that drive traffic and social sharing.
Maintain flexibility to cover major live events (i.e., Super Bowl, NBA Finals, U Open) and work outside traditional hours when needed.
Requirements:
5+ years of experience at an established digital or print journalism outlet.
Deep knowledge of major sports leagues (NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLB, golf, tennis, college sports, etc.) and the personalities and storylines shaping them.
Proven ability to break news, develop original reporting, and cultivate sources
that lead to exclusive content.
A network of industry contacts and sources to secure exclusive interviews and insights highly preferred.
Ability to write succinct, eye-catching headlines.
Knowledge and understanding of SEO best practices.
Strong editorial judgment and communication skills
Familiarity with content management systems, photo editing software, and web analytics tools.
Flexibility in covering live events (i.e. Super Bowl, US Open) and working outside traditional business hours including week night and weekends when needed.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced news environment, multitask effectively, and meet tight deadlines.
Note: The New York Post adheres to an on-site work model. This role will be expected to report into the office 5 days per week with an expectation for as needed off-site events. The shift for this position is Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm EST.
